Cheers to February as Gosforth Beer Festival launches its first winter event

A new winter festival will be offering a warm welcome to beer-lovers this February with a varied menu of ales, food and music – and free entry. Following the success of the summer Gosforth Beer Festival, which last year attracted more than 2,000 visitors from across the region, its organisers have decided it’s time for a winter edition. And the Gosforth Winter Beer Festival will be making its debut with three days of family-friendly entertainment running from February 21-23.

It will  take place at the charity-run Gosforth Civic Theatre with a choice of three time slots and highlights include ales from local, as well as national, breweries; street food vans including vegan options and music from local favourites such as  the Baghdaddies.

More than 20 craft beers will be available on cask and keg and among the breweries selling seasonal ales, stouts, porters and bitters will be Newcastle’s Almasty, Northern Alchemy and Outthere as well as Allendale from Hexham; Two by Two of Wallsend plus Cloudwater from Manchester and Moor of Bristol.

Among the food outlets, one Meat Salt Smoke – from Block & Bottle in Gateshead – also will be supplying salami all weekend. Entry is free and there won’t be a token system in operation. Festival-goers will just pay for what they want.

Friday, February 21

The first day’ session will run from 4pm until midnight. Music : World music favourites Baghdaddies will serve up what’s described as a “blend of ska and Latin influences, infused with Balkan melodies”. Food : Goodtimes Tacos, the local Mexican-inspired taco truck; Shanty Town, the shanty-singing BBQ street food trailer, and Meat Salt Smoke.

Saturday, February 22

The session will run from 12noon until midnight

Music : Live in the Lounge Presents a curated line-up headlined by The Kentucky Cow Tippers – self-proclaimed Bluegrass Kings of the North – with South Shields singer-songwriter Eve Simpson and Hambone,  the house band of Newcastle’s Monkey Junk Blues Club, who play traditional, gospel, delta and 12 bar blues Games and entertainment : popular children’s entertainer Bubbleologist Jesse Ward Food : Cheese Sir!, the local melted cheese specialists; Cocina Peru, the Peruvian street-food outlet, and Meat Salt Smoke.

Sunday, February 23

The session will run from 12noon until 8pm Games and entertainment : Retro consoles from GCT Gaming will offer parents a chance to demonstrate to their children the likes of Sega Mega Drive or Commodore 64.  

Food : Memories of the Black Forest, the Tyneside-German street food company, and Meat Salt Smoke . Gosforth Civic Theatre, in Regent Farm Road,  is run by Liberdade Community Development Trust, a charity encouraging involves those with learning disabilities and autism to become involved in community arts. Its members will be volunteering at the festival and anybody able to sponsor a volunteer or beer can a beer is asked to contact [email protected] fordetails.
