Shock as car ploughs into subway at height of Storm Dennis

A driver almost ended up down the subway in Goole following a dramatic crash in the early hours of Sunday. The driver reportedly ran from the scene after crashing his car through safety railings near the level crossings near to the town’s post office. Humberside Police remained at the scene for more than two hours as the vehicle blocked the top of the pedestrian subway that runs under the railway lines.

One witness said: “I heard a loud crash and dashed outside to see a man in his 20s or 30s running off down the road away from the scene across the level crossings.

“The front of the silver car was severely smashed, sending car debris flying right across the forecourt area hitting the shops and office fronts.” Police cars and vans rushed to the scene but it is not known if the driver has been apprehended.

Police remained at the scene for more than two hours until a recovery truck arrived to take the vehicle away at 3.15am.

Numerous revellers on a night out had to squeeze past the smashed car to get out of the subway and were shocked by the sight that greeted them. The road was partially closed while police investigated the scene and removed the car.

It is not clear if anyone else was in the car and whether there were any injuries.
