Rush hour chaos on A38 as lorry fire sparks long delays towards Birmingham
A busy commuter route into Birmingham was closed overnight due to a lorry fire. The incident happened at around 11.30pm on Monday March 2, causing the southbound carriageway of the A38 to be shut between the A513 at Fradley and the A5127 at Lichfield. Police and firefighters attended the scene to put out the fire and deal with oncoming traffic .
Commuters making their way into Birmingham early on Tuesday morning were faced with lengthy queues as the carriageway remained closed due to emergency repairs. By 7.30am, firefighters were still at the scene of the wreckage. A spokesman for Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service warned drivers to avoid the dangers of ‘rubber necking.’

He said: “Crews remaining on scene at the lorry fire A38 southbound to deal with remaining hotspots as recovery commences.
“Southbound remains closed at this time. If you are travelling north past the scene please focus on your driving not us. Please drive safe.”
Motorists are advised to find alternative routes, with Highways England recommending people follow the hollow circle via A513, A515, A51 and A5192. A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 11:21pm last night to reports of a lorry fire at Rykneld Street in Fradley. “We sent one ambulance to the scene.
Staff assessed one man, who was the lorry driver, and he was discharged at the scene.” Elsewhere, there’s queueing traffic due to broken down vehicle on M6 Southbound from J10A M54 to J10 A454 Wolverhampton / Walsall. Congestion is back to the M54, affecting all traffic approaching from J1 (Wolverhampton / Cannock) as one lane is closed.
And traffic is heavier than normal on the A456 Manor Way Eastbound at Grand Road roundabout in Halesowen and there’s lots of traffic on Harborne Road near Warley Woods due to a broken down crane between Castle Road East and Lenwade Road.
The number 48 bus service is being diverted via Hurst Road, Abby Road, Barclay Road and Lightwoods Hill.
