All lanes reopen on M6 after HGV fire

THREE lanes were closed on the M6 southbound due to a HGV fire yesterday afternoon, Tuesday. The incident was between junction 19 for the A556 Knutsford to junction 18 for the A54 Middlewich Road. The northbound carriageway between junctions 19 and 18 was also fully closed due to smoke reducing visibility, but all lanes reopened shortly after.

The cause of the closure was a HGV which collided with a barrier and caught fire around 2.50pm. Fire engines from Holmes Chapel and Greater Manchester were called to the scene and found the vehicle to be well alight on arrival.

It is believed that the HGV was carrying pallets of salt. Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel jet to combat the fire. After extinguishing the fire, crews assisted in recovering the HGV and clearing debris from the carriageway.

A thermal imaging camera was also used to check the temperature of the HGV.
