Truck Driver In Custody After Standoff Shuts Down Edens

SKOKIE, IL -- Authorities shut down the Edens Expressway in both directions at morning for more than three hours during a standoff with an armed Michigan woman in a semi-truck, police said. Around 9:15 a.m., Illinois State Police were called to the Old Orchard exit ramp of northbound Interstate 94 after getting a call from the owner of a trucking company that one of their employees was stationary on the shoulder of the expressway.
When troopers walked up to the side of the tractor-trailer to speak to the driver, they noticed a gun on her lap.

They asked her to step out of the truck and she refused, according to police. "We're not going anywhere," a police negotiator could be heard saying to the woman after she briefly opened the door to the cab of the truck.
An ISP SWAT team, crisis negotiators, investigators and members of various other agencies assisted during the standoff, including the Skokie police and fire departments, Wilmette, Northfield and Morton Grove police and the Illinois Department of Transportation, according to state police.

"If you want rest, answer the phone so we can get you out of here and get you rest," the negotiator said. "I told you, I'm not here to kill anybody. I did not kill anybody today. No one has killed anyone today."

At 12:20 p.m., the 54-year-old driver got out of the car and was taken into custody. She was taken to a nearby hospital for an assessment but was not injured in the incident. No charges had been filed as of Wednesday afternoon, police said.

"I am proud of the work and effort displayed by all ISP officers involved, and I am grateful for the assistance provided by our law enforcement partners," Cmdr.

Angelo Mollo said in a statement. "The efforts of all first responders involved contributed to today's outcome, an outcome where no one was hurt."
