Bountiful truck driver charged with sexually abusing young girls

BOUNTIFUL — A truck driver from Bountiful was charged Tuesday with sexually assaulting two young girls in separate cases, as well as possessing child pornography in a third case.

In total, Levi N. Griffis, 40, is charged in 2nd District Court with sodomy on a child and two counts of rape of a child, first-degree felonies; sex abuse of a child and 10 counts of sexual exploitation of minor, second-degree felonies.

The allegations came to light after Griffis reported himself to police, according to charging documents.

In March of 2019, Griffis took his son and his son’s friend swimming for the girl’s birthday, the charges state. The group rode in Griffis’ truck.

After swimming, they stopped to get pizza.

Griffis sent his son inside to get the food. While he was away, Griffis sexually assaulted his son’s friend, according to the charges.

“What happens on the truck stays on the truck,” he told the girl before assaulting her in the back seat, the charges state.

In June, a 13-year-old girl said she had also been sexually assaulted by Griffis, according to the charges. The girl said she began “to work” with Griffis when she was 11.

“Several times each month, (Griffis) would take (the girl) along on his nighttime trucking route. (She) reported that on her second night riding with (him) that he had sexual intercourse with her,” the charges state. “(She) disclosed that (Griffis) would have sex with her in the bed in the back of the truck’s cab every time she rode with him.

This occurred several times a month for over two years.”

When searching the girl’s phone, police found “bizarre communications for a 39-year-old man to be sending a child,” according to the charges.

A search of Griffs’ phone on April 23 as part of the investigation revealed photos of the girl and 295 other images of child pornography, the charge state.
