Drivers told to avoid Mersey Gateway after HGV overturns

DRIVERS are being urged to avoid the Mersey Gateway after a crash this afternoon, Wednesday. The roundabout and the slip road on the A533 and A557 junction in Widnes has been closed by police after a heavy goods vehicle overturned. Three fire engines from Runcorn, Widnes and Winsford are currently on the scene.

Firefighters are using specialist absorbent pads to soak up a small amount of engine oil and hydraulic oil that has leaked from the HGV's overflow pipe. On arrival crews discovered that no-one was trapped inside the HGV following the incident that occurred at the Kingsway roundabout at the bottom of the first slip road over the Mersey Gateway from Runcorn around 3.10pm. The driver of the HGV is being assessed by paramedics.

They are not believed to have sustained any serious injuries.

The HGV's tanker has not been breached.
