Gary Neville has hit back at Angel Di Maria and his wife Jorgelina Cardoso after she claimed they had a 's***' time in Manchester and branded English people 'skinny and weird'.

Di Maria arrived at Manchester United under Louis van Gaal in 2014 but struggled to make any sort of impact on the Premier League and eventually left for Paris Saint-Germain a year later.

Speaking on Spanish TV, Cardoso ruthlessly outlined all the things she hated in Manchester during her husband's unsuccessful stint at Old Trafford.

Jorgelina Cardoso claimed they had a 's***' time and branded English people 'skinny and weird'

'I begged Angel, any place but England,' she said. 'And one year later we were in Manchester, s***.

'I didn't like anything at all. The people were all skinny, neat, weird. You are walking and you don't know if they are going to kill you or not.

'The food is disgusting. 'The girls all use a lot of make up, like they are dolls.'

Asked for his thoughts on her quotes, Neville seemed unsure whether it was just a distraction because Di Maria was so poor in a United shirt and urged him to look at his compatriots at Manchester City.

He replied: 'I don't know what she means!

Seriously.

'All I would say is we hear these stories from time to time, a player has played like a drain and Di Maria did, he was awful and I had great expectations.

Neville believes the comments on the city are a distraction from Di Maria's poor form there

'But he was never interested since day one and he should look across the road at his compatriots (Sergio) Aguero or (Pablo) Zabaleta who have done alright and are not in a rush to leave.

The Argentina international's home was targeted in an attempted robbery in 2015, where burglars are believed to have used scaffolding poles to smash their way into the house.

Neville believes such a traumatic experience would always paint Manchester in a negative light in their eyes.

'She did have a bad experience in terms of a robbery and that would have clouded her view mentally,' he added.

Di Maria scored just four goals in 32 games during his season at Manchester United.

By comparison, he now has 80 goals in 217 games for French champions PSG.

Di Maria's return to Old Trafford in February 2019 with PSG was miserable, despite winning

During his time in the French capital to date, he has won nine major honours - including three Ligue 1 titles.

He won nothing with United.

Di Maria, 32, himself has hit out at United multiple times since he left and has to change the channel if they are ever on television, according to his PSG team-mate Marcin Bulka.

'Di Maria hates Manchester United,' Bulka told Polish YouTube channel Foot Truck. 'He has no good memory of the time he spent there.

'In fact, when something related to Manchester United appears on television, he changes the channel quickly.'
