Huge fire seen across Darlington yesterday was suspected arson

A HUGE fire seen across Darlington yesterday is suspected arson, a fire service has said.  County Durham & Darlington Fire & Rescue Service were called to a fire at a factory unit in Albert Hill Industrial Estate at 5.40pm yesterday, which boasted a flame that could be seen acrcoss the town and took over four hours to put out.

On arrival, the crew reported a large number of wooden pallets that were well alight. Fire engines from Darlington, Newton Aycliffe, Sedgefield and Bishop Auckland attended the scene along with a several senior officers and the Water Bowser from Spennymoor fire station. Using multiple hose reels and jets, along with help from an onsite forklift truck to create a fire break, the fire was put our at 10.15pm.

Emergency services believe it was arson, and Durham Constabulary has launched an investigation. David Hodgson, who spotted the smoke from Mowden when he was walking from Barnes Road towards Staindrop Road, said: "When I saw the black smoke I thought it looks too much for a bonfire, and was a little worried as I wasn't sure where it was coming from. It looked a lot closer than Albert Hill."

CDDFRS Assistant District Manager Mal Woodward said "This was a large-scale fire which used a significant amount of our resources. It is down to the dedication and hard work of the crews at the scene which meant the fire was brought under control and the area made safe.

We strongly condemn any person or persons who may have started this fire deliberately. "We are appealing for anyone who has any information that could help with the police investigation, or saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area at the time, to come forward."
