M3 crash: Broken down van bursts into flames after being hit by HGV
A broken down van has been destroyed in a gulf of flames after being hit by an HGV on the M3. The crash took place on the northbound carriageway, between Junction 3 (Lightwater) and Junction 2 (M25), shortly before 11am on Wednesday (May 27). Two people were treated at the scene for injuries before being taken to Frimley Park Hospital and Royal Surrey County Hospital for further treatment.
Two lanes of the carriageway remain closed while they are assessed for damage following the fire. Meanwhile, a full diversion route has been put in place by Highways England. Surrey Road Cops tweeted: “The M3 is in the process of being reopened to all traffic.
“Amazingly nobody was seriously injured after the van broken down and was hit by a HGV as the driver failed to see the van.”
Pictures from the scene show the remnants of the vehicle following the fire, as well as earlier images of smoke rising from the scene and the heavy traffic caused by the incident.
