Metro disruption to last to end of the day

Metro services between St James and North Shields and Pelaw and South Hylton are to remain suspended for the rest of the day. Nexus, the public body which owns and manages Metro, said work was ongoing to repair damaged power cables at Byker, and that Network Rail were working on repairs to a downed section of overhead line at Sunderland station.

A replacement bus service, 900, is in operation between St James and North Shields, while local bus operators Go North East and Stagecoach are accepting Metro tickets between for journeys from Heworth to Sunderland. A Nexus spokesman said: "We're sorry for the major disruption to our customers who need to use Metro.

"The repairs to the damaged power cables is extensive and will carry on for the rest of the day and overnight. "Network Rail own and manage the line between Pelaw and Sunderland and they have to repair damaged overhead wires. We are waiting for a full repair time on that job, but that section of line will certainly be off for the rest of the day."
