Pedestrian killed by tanker on the M56

A pedestrian has been killed after being hit by a HGV tanker in the early hours of this morning. The incident happened on the eastbound carriageway of the M56 at around 5.30am. Emergency services were called but the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, which was between junctions 12 at Helsby and 14 at Runcorn.

The accident caused huge tailbacks as the motorway was initially closed with the westbound carriageway reopening a few hours later.

Diversions on the eastbound carriageway saw traffic diverted causing delays. The motorway has since fully reopened. A Cheshire Police spokesman said: "At around 5.30am on Monday, May 18, police were called to reports of a collision on the M56 in Cheshire, between junctions 12 and 14.

"On arrival it was found that a HGV tanker, travelling in the direction of Runcorn, had been involved in a collision with a pedestrian. "The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the HGV was uninjured and liaised with officers at the scene.

"The M56 was closed eastbound while investigation work was carried out at the scene.
