Residents displaced after basement fire in Cheshire; no injuries reported

CHESHIRE - The residents of a single-family home on Heath Court and their pets have been temporarily displaced after a fire broke out in their basement early Friday evening.  Fire crews received a call of a reported basement fire in the residence at 15 Heath Court shorly after 5 p.m. Friday.

First responding crews reported seeing smoke billowing from the home, said Fire Chief Jack Casner.  Those crews entered the home and into the basement, where they found a "well-involved basement fire" which Casner said was extinguished in about 20 minutes.  None of the home's three residents were home at the time of the fire.

Two dogs were in the building and were unharmed, Casner said. All of the house's occupants have places to stay, he said.  Four fire engines and a ladder truck from Cheshire responded to the scene.

Casner estimated 25 firefighters responded to the scene.   Mutual aid from Southington and Wolcott provided station coverage while Cheshire firefighters were on scene. Casner reported no injuries to firefighters while they battled the blaze.

The Cheshire Fire Marshals Office is investigating the fire's cause and origin, Casner said.
