Lorry drivers charged with drink driving after HGVs ploughed down A19 the wrong way are named

Two men have been charged after two HGVs drove the wrong way down the northbound carriageway on the A19. The incident caused chaos on the carriageway near Wolviston on Sunday evening. Startled motorists found themselves grid locked at the scene at around 9pm.

Arunas Valacka, 43, of Berzu, Alytus, Lithuania, and Andrei Vasilachi, 58, of Vladtepech, Chichiwav, Moldova, have now been charged with driving whilst under the influence of alcohol and dangerous driving. The two men are due to appear at Teesside Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

The driver of the car, a man in his 70s, from South Shields, was left shaken by the incident, his family say. "He had to reverse up and he said he thought he was going to have to jump out the car at one point.

He's been so lucky," his daughter told Teesside Live.
