M61 live: Second 'serious incident' near Bolton involving HGV carrying horses

A second serious collision involving multiple vehicles and a HGV carrying horses has closed part of the M61 near Bolton. Emergency services were called to the M61 southbound carriageway between Junction 6 for Horwich and 5 for Westhoughton. It came just 15 minutes after traffic was released in both directions following an earlier police incident between Junction 2 and 4 near Farnworth.

A Highways England spokesperson said: "The M61 in Greater Manchester is currently closed southbound between J6 and J5 near Bolton due to a serious collision involving multiple vehicles including a HGV carrying horses. "All emergency services including the North West Motorway Police Group are in attendance. Highways England has resources deployed to assist.

"Road users are advised to expect disruption and to allow extra journey time." The following diversions are in place: Road users are advised to follow the solid black diamond diversion symbol on road signs.

Exit the M61 at J6, taking the third exit at the roundabout to join the A6027 west. At the next roundabout take the first exit to join the A6 south. Follow the A6 south to the next roundabout at Chequerbent (A58 junction).

Take the first exit at the roundabout and join the A58 east. Follow the A58 east to the M61 J5 and re-join the M61 southbound. This is a live breaking news story and will be updated with the latest information.
