Live updates – M5 lorry fire near Worcester causes huge traffic delays

Lorry caught fire ‘moments before tyre repair started’

The lorry on fire on the M5 near Worcester belongs to A Hingley Transport. The driver had stopped between the slip roads by junction 7 for Worcester South at around 2pm after a tyre blowout. The tyre repairer had just arrived at the scene and sensed the danger.

A spokesman for A Hingley Transport said: “Our driver had a blow out on the M5 and the tyre company was going out to it. They had just got to it and saw smoke getting bigger and they walked away from it when it caught fire. Our driver was fine.

“The load was steel being brought from south Wales to the Midlands.

It won’t melt but it might be damaged.

“One of our guys was going to see what he can do to get the driver home and to organise the recovery of the vehicle.”
