A new mother was forced to give birth on the passenger seat as her husband sped along the motorway.

Laura Jackson was en route to Bolton Hospital with her husband Joe, 37, after her contractions started.

But by the time Mr Jackson hit the motorway, his 33-year-old wife had already gone into labour and minutes later, was forced to deliver her baby near a junction on the M61.

Mrs Jackson said: 'It was so surreal. For some reason, I knew it was going to be quick. But I don't think anyone believed me, apart from my friend who's a midwife.

'I never thought I'd deliver a baby, let alone mine. But I was reassured when I heard her cry and let out a little whimper and started changing colour.

'Four minutes into speaking to the paramedics on the phone, I knew it was going to happen.

I was just having to concentrate on breathing and being trapped in the car wasn't where I wanted to be.'

Her partner Joe, a furloughed HGV driver, said he went into auto-pilot and tried his best to charge down the motorway as their baby was born at 6.24am.

He added: 'Driving is like second nature to me. I just blasted my horn out until we got to the hospital. Within five minutes, Laura told me, 'the baby's head's coming.'

'I couldn't panic because I knew I had to drive.

There was nothing I could do to deliver the baby.

'I looked down and could see the baby's head so I needed to check her umbilical cord.

'I'm in the third lane [with] one hand on [Laura's] knee and the other on the steering wheel. Ten or 20 seconds after that, the baby started crying out. It was reassuring to know she'd had her first breath.'

Mr Jackson said they may gift their daughter the 'birthing vehicle' for her 18th birthday

Mrs Jackson added: 'I think watching One Born Every Minute helped - otherwise I would've gone into a panic.

'I watched one episode not too long ago about delivering in the car.

So it helped me lift her up and on to my belly.'

The couple were met by paramedics at hospital who helped cut their placenta, and were home by 12.30pm.

The miracle baby comes after  Mrs Jackson suffered three miscarriages in the last two years, and follows her grandmother dying of Covid-19.
