Recap: M61 delays after two 'serious' incidents in two hours near Bolton

A serious crash closed a section of the M61 just hours after the entire motorway was closed in a police incident. The M61 was closed in both directions on Tuesday afternoon after a man was spotted on a motorway bridge near Farnworth. There were large traffic queues after the closure, which led police to urge people to avoid the area as officers deal with the incident.

Officers were called to the scene at about 2.20pm amid concerns for a man who was on a bridge. Both the northbound and southbound carriageways were closed by police. Delays of nearly an hour were reported by travel services.

Traffic queues were stretching as far as the junction with the M60 to the south and up to junction 5 to the north an hour after the incident. The incident was concluded just before 4pm with traffic released both ways. But less than 15 minutes later traffic had to be stopped between Junction 6 for Bolton North and Junction 5 for Bolton on the southbound carriageway.

The southbound carriageway wasshut due to the "serious" collision, which involved multiple vehicles and a HGV carrying a horse.
