A passing truck driver from Brown’s Oil Co. notices smoke coming from a window of a house at 256 Westervelt Ave. in New Brighton and alerts the family of Marco Conte.

When firefighters arrive, they find one fire hydrant frozen and are forced to extend hoses for 500 feet before finding an operative hydrant.

The family quickly leaves the building, but firefighters find the 54-year-old Conte still inside the house.

“The firemen arrived and got me out. These guys did a crackerjack job. They save me a lot,” he says.
