Driver taken to hospital after HGV leaves M56 and crashes into bridge near Ellesmere Port

The driver of an HGV has been taken to hospital after his vehicle left the road following an incident on the M56 this evening (August 8). Emergency services were called to the scene, near Ellesmere Port, shortly before 7pm. The incident occurred on a slip road at junction 15, where the motorway joins the M53.

According to officers on the scene, the exit slip of the M56 heading westbound has been shut while recovery work is carried out.

Inspections are also being carried out on the bridge structure and the closure is expected to remain in place for some time. Diversions are in place, and trapped traffic already on the slip is believed to have been directed past the scene. A spokesperson for North West Motorway Police said: “Driver of this HGV has gone to hospital with slight injuries.

“Slip road from M56 [westbound] to M53 [nortbound] will be closed for sometime for recovery. “Diversion is SB to J12 (Hoole/Chester) and turn back [northbound].” Images from the scene show the truck has left the carriageway, ending up on an embankment.

Emergency services, including ambulance, attended the incident.

There is a small amount of congestion close to the slip road closure.
