Lorry fire closes M62 between Huddersfield and Manchester

Highways England officers have completely closed the westbound M62 from West Yorkshire to Greater Manchester after an HGV set on fire. The incident is in a layby close to junction 22 at Ripponden. The closure was put in place as thick smoke is blowing across the carriageway.

Motorway patrol officers are waiting for Greater Manchester fire crews to arrive before they can consider re-opening the lanes. As things stand the eastbound side is still open. Traffic is relatively light but there is some congestion back towards Huddersfield, live traffic maps suggest.

The incident is predicted to last until about 7.30pm.
