Royal Mail lorry driver taken to hospital after early hours crash

A Royal Mail lorry driver was taken to hospital after a collision with a car in Warwickshire which saw the other driver flee the scene. All three emergency services were called to the scene of the crash on the A423 Oxford Road between Princethorpe and Ryton-on-Dunsmore in the early hours of this morning (Friday, August 28). It has been confirmed that the collision happened just before 1am.

Crews from Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to free the lorry driver from his cab before he was assessed by medics from West Midlands Ambulance Service. He was treated for back injuries that are not thought to be serious and then taken to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire for further treatment. A spokesman for the fire service said the driver of the car had fled the scene.

The vehicle involved suffered significant damage

 

A spokesperson for Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were alerted at 12:55am to reports of a Road Traffic Collision involving a HGV and a private motor vehicle on the A423 between Princethorpe and Ryton.

“Two crews attended the scene and found that the driver of the HGV was physically trapped in the cab of his vehicle. “The car involved in the incident was in a ditch and its occupants had fled the scene.  “Crews were detained at the scene for around 30 minutes.

Police and ambulance service attended this incident.”

What did the ambulance service say?

A spokesperson for the West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called to the A423 Oxford Road, Princethorpe, Rugby, at 0.44am this morning to reports of a collision involving a car and a lorry.  “Crews assessed the driver of the lorry, a man, who had sustained injuries not believed to be serious. “He was taken to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire for further treatment.”

What have police said?

A spokesperson for Warwickshire Police said: “Police were called shortly after 12.50am this morning (Friday, 28 August) to a report of a collision involving a car and a lorry on the A423 Oxford Road between Princethorpe and Ryton-on-Dunsmore.”

However, the spokesperson was unable to confirm if the driver of the car had been arrested. They said that once found, the motorist was taken to hospital.

The vehicle ended up in a ditch beside the road

An earlier post, from the OPU Warwickshire Police Facebook page said: “In the early hours of this morning we attended the A423 Oxford Road Ryton Upon Dunsmore to a two vehicle Collision involving a white Mercedes and a Royal Mail Articulated lorry.” It added: “With assistance from Warwickshire Fire and Rescue and West Midlands Ambulance service the driver of the Lorry was freed from his cab after being mechanically trapped.

The lorry driver sustained an injury to his back. Both vehicles recovered from the scene. “The Investigation is ongoing.”
