A303 crash: Road closed to traffic after 'serious' accident near Wincanton
This blog has now closed – for all the updates as they happened see below. A serious crash in Somerset led to a major road being closed in both directions this morning. The A303 in Wincanton was closed due to an accident, which saw a car collide with the central reservation this morning (September 14).
The road has since reopened in both directions according to Highways England South West. Traffic monitoring site Inrix reported the accident initially occurred on the eastbound carriageway before the car went into the reservation. Traffic service Inrix reports: “A303 in both directions blocked, queuing traffic due to serious accident, one vehicle involved from A371 (Wincanton) to B3081 (Leigh Common).
“Road now blocked both directions following an accident on the eastbound carriageway which has resulted in the vehicle colliding into the central reservation.” Travel Somerset tweeted at around 11.10am saying they had reports of a crash and advised drivers to follow local diversions. They wrote: “We have reports of an RTC on the A303 near Wincanton, which has closed the road in both directions. Updates to come when it re-opens; in the meantime please follow local diversions.”
Avon and Somerset Police said that a male driver was taken to hospital following the crash. A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: “At approximately 10.25am this morning (Monday 14 September) we attended a call from the ambulance service following a single vehicle collision on the A303 Wincanton near the Wiltshire border, involving a male driver who was taken to hospital with injuries that are not thought to be life threatening.
“The road was temporarily closed in the eastbound direction and reduced to one lane westbound. “Traffic is now moving, but one lane on the eastbound carriageway remains closed while the vehicle is recovered.” Devon Fire and Rescue Service added that he was cut out of his vehicle after it overturned on the road, they also said that no other vehicles were involved.
A spokesman said: “We were called to an incident at 10.15 on the A303 from Wincanton to Mere and three fire crews attended. Crews used cutting equipment to release a man from an overturned vehicle and he went to hospital via land ambulance. “No other vehicles were involved.”
The A303 is a trunk road in southern England, running between Basingstoke in Hampshire and Honiton in Devon via Stonehenge. Connecting the M3 and the A30, it is part of one of the main routes from London to Devon and Cornwall. It is a primary A road throughout its length, passing through five counties.
