HGV drivers ignore signs and try to drive onto closed A5

Highaways England bosses have issued a warning to HGV drivers who are ignoring A5 road closures. They say that they have received reports of large vehicles trying to access the A5 at the A444 Longshoot  despite the road being closed from 8pm. “This means they are trying to turn around in limited road space and have caused damage to the roadside,” the firm said.

They have appeaed to all motorists to follow the diversion routes and not ignore the closures. “Please help road users and local residents by following the diversion route and plannin alternative routes away from the A444/A5 during our overnight closures.” The A444 Weddington Lane / A5 Junction at the Redgate is closed for overnight roadworks, 8pm-6am, throughout this week.

It is part of ongoing works in the area. Works have already taken place at another accident blackspot on the A5, known locally as the Royal Redgate junction. A new mini roundabout was created at the junction to help make access on the A5 to the A444, both heading towards Weddington Lane and also Atherstone Road, easier and safer.

Further along the A5, there are plans to transform the A5 between the M69 and M42 into a dual carriageway, with a view to completing the construction by 2030.
