Inquest opens into death of 'loving father' killed as vehicle was recovered on A55

A “loving father” was killed after being hit by a car while his own vehicle was being recovered on the A55. The opening of an inquest in Ruthin today heard that Michael Barnicle had been standing on a verge when the accident happened on the westbound carriageway near the Northop on-slip just after 1am on September 19. The 44-year-old of Penryn Isaf Road, Llandudno, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Coroner for North Wales east and central, John Gittins said Mr Barnicle’s Vauxhall Grandland X had broken down and had been loaded onto a recovery truck. He was standing on a verge next to the truck when “another vehicle heading along the A55 was driven down the nearside of the recovery truck striking him in the process.”

A post-mortem examination carried out gave a cause of death as a head injury. Mr Gittins said the incident is still being investigated by North Wales Police and adjourned the inquest to a date yet to be fixed.

In a statement from his family, Mr Barnicle – a delivery driver for Llandudno Carpets – was described as “a family man through and through” who “lit up” their lives. It said: “Michael was the most incredible father, partner, son, brother and uncle. “As a family we can’t express how much we love him and how missed he will be.
