Lorry drivers 'treated like second class citizens'

Readers have jumped to the defence of lorry drivers who were criticised for using a popular Staffordshire beauty spot to wash and as a toilet They have told how truckers have to pay GBP30 to park at some motorway service stations to sleep in their vehicles and use the toilets as they do their jobs and there was no wonder that they opted to relieve themselves elsewhere. Their comments come after Chesterton Community Angling Club, which is based at Lymedale Pools, near Newcastle under Lyme, said lorry drivers had been leaving behind human waste at its site for years, with one driver even seen bathing in the water with shower gel and a towel.

Commenting on the story, one trucker, called Burtonbornandbred, said: “Too many truck stops and other facilities for truck drivers have closed over the last 20 years so it’s hardly surprising this is happening. We are key workers but we get treated like tramps. “We were being clapped along with NHS workers a few short weeks ago.

People should remember if it wasn’t for truckers there would be nothing on the shelves.” This is how to get your newspaper delivered to your front door: Emilee said: “Not forgetting that many service stations up and down the country closed their doors to truckers because of the virus which further exacerbated an already impossible situation.

“High time the Road Haulage Association had a serious conversation with the government and service area providers on this issue.” Tina Maria Harrison writing on Burton Mail’s Facebook page said: “My husband is a truck driver and works nights, and he told me that there is nowhere for drivers to park up without it costing GBP30. Plus you multiply that by six, totalling GBP180 just to sleep in their own trucks and use the toilets.

“It’s a disgrace and services should be ashamed of themselves. If a trucker took strike action the country would come to a standstill, no food for shops, no Amazon, Ebay, furniture, clothes. It’s about time these hardworking truckers got respect they deserve.

“My husband had to use a plastic bottle to urinate in for bit. ” Lorry driver Clive Machin wrote: “I’m a driver myself and am on a night out right now. “All anyone that has driven over Europe ever says is that the UK facilities are the worst anywhere by far.

If you do manage to get into motorway services, which are very often full, they charge about GBP30 a night to sleep in your own truck. We are treated like second class citizens.” Dave Read said: “Instead of demonising the hard working people who work long and usually unsocial hours to get the food into your supermarkets, your Amazon deliveries into your local depots etc why not have a heart and consider that they often have no choice?

“Sometimes an industrial estate or a lay-by is the only place they can kip for the night once the tacho runs out, and local supermarkets, pubs and restaurants running shortened hours means they have no access to toilets or bathrooms.” Ian Gould said: “There are loads of truck drivers, maybe overnight parks with basic amenities would be better. Maybe Supermarkets and the like could subsidise these.”

Beverley Jayne Theaker said: “My husband is a driver and he says a lot of toilets aren’t open at the minute because of covid so what are they meant to do? Kevin Tizzard said: “There used to be transport cafes but they’ve all gone.” Paul Salt said: “When someone works on the road all day and the council close all the toilets what did they think would happen.

Closing toilets where you can wash your hands during a pandemic, idiots in charge.”
