M5 traffic brought to a standstill after four vehicle crash

There have been long delays on the M5 in Somerset following a four-vehicle crash. There are reports that three cars and a van were involved in a collision between Bridgwater and Taunton. There were further reports of debris on the road, a breakdown and emergency repairs on the southbound carriageway near Taunton with delays back to junction 23 for Bridgwater north.

And there were further delays on other major routes across the region this evening, including the M4, A370 and A37. Traffic has since returned to normal but details of what happened appear in the live blog below. Highways England initially said it closed two lanes of M5 for emergency repairs at junction 25 at around 3.15 pm today (Wednesday, October 21)

Traffic service INRIX reported two lanes were closed and slow traffic due to debris on road on M5 Southbound between J25 A358 (Taunton) to J26 A38 (Wellington).

It also reported that two lanes were closed and there is slow traffic due to a broken down vehicle on M5 Southbound from J24 A38 Taunton Road (Bridgwater South) to J25 A358 (Taunton).

At around 4pm Travel Somerset and Highwyas England reported a crash, with the former posting: “Two lanes closed and queueing traffic due to accident, three cars and a van involved on M5 Southbound from J24 A38 Taunton Road (Bridgwater South) to J25 A358 (Taunton).”
