Sometimes, there’s nothing like a good curry.  Whether you’re looking for an authentic Indian dining experience or a delicious takeaway during lockdown – it is one of the nation’s best-loved cuisines.  And Cambridge is home to a plethora of wonderful Indian restaurants offering a diverse range of dishes – including a standout pulled chicken tikka burger.

1. Chai Walla Cambridge

“You’d be a Chai-Wally not to.”

The beloved restaurant, which opened its Cambridge branch in the summer of 2019, scores excellent ratings for food, service and value. Chai Walla, which came to the city after becoming Bath’s number one Indian restaurant, received glowing reviews for its fresh, wholesome and not too oily menu. Many of the comments are odes to its  onion bhajis and samosas.

2. The Seven Stars

A Grade II listed building on the outside, a fresh, modern establishment inside. The Seven Stars in Newmarket Road is one of Cambridge’s oldest pubs.

It boasts a wide selection of Indian dishes including a variety of vegetarian and vegan options flavoured with “hundreds of spices”. One Tripadvisor user says: “The butter chicken and malabar curries we ordered were the best we’ve ever had, and for such an affordable price!” “The Chilli Paneer is to die for,” according to another.

Tawa Kitchen is a hidden gem, tucked away by the railway station. Quality ingredients yet reasonably priced, attentive and helpful staff and one the most authentic Indian food experiences in Cambridge. These what some of the reviews say:

4.Taj Tandoori

Taj Tandoori is famed for its modern takes on traditional dishes.

The menu is a twist on a standard Indian restaurant selection, with some old favourites and some more modern street food. The Taj team are on hand to help and advise if you’re not sure what to order from the refreshingly varied options. Big plus according to a review: Its packaging is sustainable/compostable/biodegradable.

5. Navadhanya

Honoured with a prestigious listing in the Michelin Guide, Navadhanya is a must for anybody that likes Indian food.

Each course is delicious and beautifully presented, and although on the more expensive side, customers find it is good value for money. If you are looking for some fabulous Indian food helpful and accommodating staff, you should head down to Abdul & Modu’s Pipasha in Newmarket Road.

The Tiffin Truck’s menu have been inspired by Indian street food favourites and home-style tiffin lunches enjoyed by workers across India. Reviews describe it as a”chic Indian Street food – tapas place with a bit of hustle and bustle”. “Amazing beef fry and parotta and its halal too.
