Phantom post box pilferer strikes in Staffordshire

Police are hunting a phantom post box pilferer who is targeting quiet villages. The bizarre thefts began last week, when three post boxes – weighing around 1.5 tonnes each – and a property sign were taken from locations in Yoxall, Woodmill and Rugeley in Staffordshire. Another postbox was stolen in Newlands Lane, Stockwell Heath, some time between 10.50am on November 9 and 11am on November 10.

A property sign was also taken at around 10.20pm on November 10 in Morrey Lane, Hadley End, Yoxall. Another strange theft saw 2.5m of metal chain taken from Blithfield Reservoir, in Port Lane, Abbots Bromley, between 4pm on November 10 and 7am on November 11. Officers believe a dark pickup truck may be involved after one was spotted in Morrey Lane.

Pc Richard Lymer, of the East Staffordshire Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Through our investigations, we have also become aware of further incidences involving a neighbouring force. “We will continue to pool our resources and information in order to catch those responsible.”
