Recap – HGV driver dies after 'suffering medical emergency' at the wheel on M5

A driver has died on the M5 after ‘suffering a medical emergency’ behind the wheel. Part of the M5 was closed when the HGV smashed into barriers at J1 (West Bromwich) on Friday, November 20. Medics arrived at the scene just after 7am but sadly nothing could be done to save the man and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “When crews arrived, they found a man, who was the driver of the lorry, in a critical condition with bystander CPR already in progress.  “Crews took over treatment, with the critical care paramedic administering advanced life support to the patient.  “Unfortunately, despite the best efforts, nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead at the scene.”

A stretch of the northbound carriageway – between J1 A41 Birmingham Road (West Bromwich / Birmingham) and M6 J8 – was closed following the tragic incident, but has since reopened.

However the M5 northbound link to the M6 is expected to remain closed for some time as extensive barrier repairs are needed.
