Vauxhall Astra with leaky exhaust hanging by a thread lands driver in trouble

A car exhaust hanging by a thread has landed a Derbyshire driver in trouble with the police. The driver of the Vauxhall Astra was stopped in William Nadin Way, Swadlincote, yesterday, November 19, by officers from the South Derbyshire Response Unit. Officers pulled it over due to the poor condition of the vehicle, with the exhaust held in place with thin wire and “leaking like a sieve”.

It also had an insecure battery and the silver Vauxhall was immediately recovered and taken off the road. The driver was given an immediate prohibition notice, which means the vehicle will be immobilised and it cannot be driven immediately after the notice has been handed out. According to the government website, drivers handed the “Pg9” notice could also be prosecuted.

A spokesman for Derbyshire police said: “The driver was given an immediate Pg 9 prohibition notice due to concerns about the vehicle’s condition, with particular concerns about a defective exhaust and an insecure battery.

“The vehicle was recovered and taken off the road.”

The police’s post was shared on social media, alongside of a close-up picture of the exhaust being held in place by the wire.

A second picture shows the car ready to go on the back of a recovery truck to be taken away.
