M1 shut in both directions after lorry bursts into flames near Barnsley
Emergency services attended to reports of a refrigerated lorry on fire on the M1 near Barnsley. Traffic was forced to stop between J38 A637 Huddersfield Road (Woolley/Huddersfield) and J37 A628 Whinby Road (Barnsley/Dodworth) today (Tuesday). Huge clouds of smoke were seen billowing from the vehicle, which was fully ablaze on the hard shoulder.
Traffic was stopped at around 1.30pm and all lanes on the road reopened just after 10.30pm – almost 10 hours later. South Yorkshire Police confirmed that the heavy goods vehicle was carrying a large quantity of butter and other dairy products and the driver was safe. Traffic monitoring system Inrix said: “All lanes open, emergency repairs complete and earlier lorry fire on M1 Southbound between J38 A637 Huddersfield Road (Woolley / Huddersfield) and J37 A628 Whinby Road (Barnsley / Dodworth).”
