Pictures show aftermath of huge lorry fire on M1 near Barnsley

A refrigerated lorry carrying “milk and other dairy products” was completely gutted by a fire which closed the M1 near Barnsley in both directions. The huge fire, which brought drivers to a standstill, broke out on the M1 Southbound J38 A637 Huddersfield Road (Woolley/Huddersfield) and J37 A628 Whinby Road (Barnsley/Dodworth) at around 1.30pm today (Tuesday). Drivers on the M1 Northbound were also forced to stop close due to the debris shooting over the central reservation, Highways England has said.

Thick black smoke was pictured billowing from the lorry which was ablaze on the hard shoulder and motorists were advised to avoid the area. Now images of the burnt lorry have been released by South Yorkshire Police and Highways England. Two out of three lanes have since reopened on the road just before 6pm this evening and there is still congestion on the roads.

Highways England Yorkshire said the lorry driver was accounted for.
