Rare, classic VW stolen from garage in well-planned heist

This rare classic car has been stolen from the owner’s garage in Salford. The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Cabriolet was taken from the Broughton Park area on Saturday. Owner, David Joseph, said: “The car belonged to my wife, Debbie, before we were married.

We have had it for about 30 years and it is a 1971 model. “There are about 1100 registered in the UK, but this one is rarer as it is a convertible. We had been planning to have it done up to a really high standard.

The electrics were a bit unreliable and needed updating. “It had been in the garage for about three years and had not been out at all in the last year with the pandemic. Those who took it must have had a trailer or tow truck.

“You steal a car for one of two reasons – to do a job or to take to order. This is never going to be used as a getaway car, so I suspect it is in a container and on its way to a sunnier climate abroad. “I would say it is worth ?15,000 to ?16,000.

But no one got hurt, and we have a worldwide pandemic, on the scale of things it is not that a big a deal – but it is so annoying.

Our garage was the only one that was broken into. They must have been aware for a while it was in there. It was very well planned.

To be fair to the police they took it very seriously and were around in 30 minutes.” The car was in one of a row of garages provided for residents of a block of flats in the area. The VW Karmann Ghia made its debut at the 1955 car shows in Paris and Frankfurt.

It was built in Germany until 1974 when it was replaced by the Golf-based Scirocco.
