Routine M6 stop check on Turkish lorry uncovers outstanding illegal smuggling fine

A lorry registered in Turkey was seized by Cheshire police after it was discovered it owed GBP8,000 in fines relating to illegal clandestine smuggling. The Turkish truck was stopped while travelling on the M6 on Monday (January 11). The vehicle was taken into the Sandbach check site, located at the Sandbach services off the M6.

After running a routine check, it was discovered that the company owning the vehicle had an outstanding fine of GBP8,000 relating to illegal clandestine smuggling. The lorry was immediately seized by officers but released after the fine was paid.

A spokesperson for Cheshire police said: “At around 11.30am on Monday 11 January officers from the North West Commercial Vehicle Unit conducted a stop check on a Turkish vehicle at Sandbach Service Station. “While checking the records the officers found that the owners of the vehicle had an outstanding fine of GBP8,000 from August 2019 which related to illegal clandestine smuggling.

“The vehicle was subsequently seized by officers, and was later released after the fine was paid in full.”
