Van crashed into M5 barrier to avoid HGV being driven 'erratically'

A van smashed into an M5 safety barrier while attempting to avoid a lorry which was being driven erratically, police have said. Officers have now launched an appeal and are urging anyone with dashcam footage to come forward. The crash happened at around 5.40am on Tuesday (January 5) between J24 (Bridgwater) and J23 (Dunball Interchange) on the northbound carriageway.

Luckily, the van driver was uninjured, but extensive damage was caused to a road sign and the vehicle. An Avon and Somerset police spokesperson said: “The driver of a white Ford Transit van was forced to swerve to avoid a dark coloured HGV, and collided with a road sign in the central reservation, causing extensive damage to the sign and vehicle. “The driver of the HGV failed to stop following the incident and we’re keen to identify them.
