Hero truck driver “literally gave the coat off their back” in rescue of wrecked motorist

A truck driver is being thanked for his life-saving actions after he helped a woman who was trapped in her car for hours after crashing. John Bedard, a Poland Spring Truck driver, noticed the single-car crash while he was driving near Ed’s Grove Discount Warehouse in Lyman, Maine. Another passerby had already stopped to help, and Bedard pulled over to join. Bedard usually takes a different route but said something made him go the other way on this particular morning.

When he came upon the woman’s car, it was well off the main road and frosted over. It had likely been there since before midnight. Just before 4:45 a.m. on Friday, Feburary 5, emergency crews were called and responded to the scene.

Bedard and the other good Samaritan stayed with the driver and covered her in warm clothes until first responders arrived.

“We would like to thank the two men, one of whom works for Poland Springs who literally gave the occupant the coats off their back and gloves off their hands. They called for help, and stayed until first responders arrived. It is people like these two who make Maine a great place to live, and restore our faith in humanity,” wrote Goodwins Mills Fire-Rescue in a Facebook post.

Goodwins-Mills Fire Chief, Mathiew Duross, said the driver of the car could have been trapped there for upwards of 8 hours. “It’s good to know that she’s okay,” Bedard said. “That’s the whole thing. We were at the right place at the right time.

If we didn’t stop, with the condition of the weather and not knowing if anyone would have seen her until daylight, you don’t know.”

“The biggest message is ‘Thank you,'” Goodwins-Mills Fire Chief Mathiew Duross said. “Being there for so long there’s the potential multiple vehicles did end up going by that location and not see the accident.”

The driver had minor injuries and is now recovering at home.

Duross said she plans to thank both of the men who helped her.
