Mum-of-four died after car broke down on motorway and lorry smashed into back of her

A mum-of-four died after her car broke down on the motorway and a lorry smashed into the back of her, an inquest heard. Shirley-Ann Dumbuya’s husband found her car on the verge of the M60, in Middleton, Greater Manchester, after he drove to the scene. He rushed to her aid when she failed to answer his phone call after she rang him to discuss breakdown cover, the Manchester Evening News reports.

Ms Dumbuya, from Moston, Manchester, died at the scene after the lorry crashed into the back of her Kia Ceed near junction 20 of the M60 on January 21, the inquest heard. The 38-year-old student nurse’s car had broken down and was stationary in lane one of the anti-clockwise carriageway just before the collision.

A 33-year-old man has been charged with causing death by careless driving following the fatal collision. He is due to appear before Manchester Magistrates’ Court this morning.

An inquest into Ms Dumbuya’s death was opened at Rochdale Coroner’s Court yesterday. Police coroner’s officer Paula Mills told the hearing how the University of Bolton student had been driving in lane one of the motorway when her car broke down. Ms Mills said: “Her husband received a call stating that her car had broken down.

“He contacted breakdown cover then tried to phone her back to no avail. “Footage recovered from a dash cam showed that she was stationary in lane one when the truck collided into the rear of her vehicle.” Emergency services were called to the scene but Ms Dumbuya was pronounced dead after suffering multiple injuries.

Her husband rushed to the crash and saw his wife’s car on the verge, the inquest heard. Coroner Catherine McKenna adjourned the inquest for a review on May 3.

A criminal investigation into the incident is ongoing. Following her death, Ms Dumbuya’s heartbroken family paid tribute to her.

They said: “Our beautiful mum, words cannot express how amazing she was. A truly God-fearing inspiration to everyone she met. “She will always be in our hearts and will always be sorely missed.

“Our rock, our mum – never ever to be forgotten. Hold your loved ones that little bit tighter and appreciate every moment no matter how small. We miss you mum.”

Ms Dumbuya’s daughter added: “No words can express how much I love you, but you are with God now!

“You always said ‘be a fighter’, not physically but with your spirit and your soul – I love you!!!”
