A mother-of-four died in her car on the M60 after she broke down and a lorry smashed into her, an inquest heard. Shirley-Ann Dumbuya tragically lost her life after a HGV collided into the back of her Kia Ceed near to junction 20 on the anticlockwise carriageway. The 38-year-old student nurse’s car had broken down and was stationary in lane one just before the collision.

Shirley-Ann, from Moston, called her husband to arrange breakdown cover. He called her back but could never get hold of her, the inquest was told.

She sadly died at the scene after the collision. A 33-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by driving without due care and attention.

An inquest into Shirley-Ann’s death was opened at Rochdale Coroner’s Court today (February 1).

Police coroner’s officer Paula Mills told the hearing how the University of Bolton student had been driving her Kia in lane one of the motorway when her car broke down. “Her husband received a call stating that her car had broken down”, Ms Mills said. “He contacted breakdown cover then tried to phone her back to no avail.

“Footage recovered from a dash cam showed that she was stationary in lane one when the truck collided into the rear of her vehicle.” Emergency services attended at the scene but Shirley-Ann was sadly pronounced dead after suffering multiple injuries.

Her husband rushed to the crash and saw his wife’s car on the verge, the inquest heard. Coroner Catherine McKenna adjourned the inquest for a review on May 3. A criminal investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Following her death, Shirley Ann’s heartbroken family paid tribute to her – they said that ‘words cannot express how amazing she was’. They said: “Our beautiful mum, words cannot express how amazing she was. A truly God-fearing inspiration to everyone she met.

“She will always be in our hearts and will always be sorely missed. “Our rock, our mum – never ever to be forgotten. Hold your loved ones that little bit tighter and appreciate every moment no matter how small.

We miss you mum.”

Shirley-Ann’s daughter added: “No words can express how much I love you, but you are with God now!

“You always said ‘be a fighter’, not physically but with your spirit and your soul – I love you!!!”
