Truck driver in court for crashing into motorist, state vehicles in Mpumalanga
The community went on the rampage on Friday over the closure of a mine in the area. Provincial police spokesperson Leonard Hlathi says a woman was killed when the truck smashed into eight stationary vehicles. “A truck came from Carolina, driven by a Mozambican national, which plunged on eight vehicles and in one of those vehicles, a woman was fatally wounded.
“We have opened a case of unlawful protest as well as culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving against the driver,” says Hlathi. “During the protest, six vehicles belonging to the police were damaged, as well as one traffic department vehicle and provincial vehicle.” Two police officers were also injured after they were pelted with stones by the protestors.
“We have called on the community to work with us because all of those who were involved in the damaging of property must face the full might of the law,” says Hlathi.
The driver is expected to appear in court soon for charges of negligent driving and culpable homicide.
