Vauxhall Astra driver's cheeky lie sees his car seized by police in Swadlincote

A motorist wanted by police cheekily tried to claim he was not driving his car when police finally caught him by saying was only sitting in the vehicle as he retrieved his phone charger. Police had been on the look out for him for several days and were having none of it when they caught up with him, and he tried to lie his way out of the situation. They dismissed fib, having seen the car pull and seized the vehicle.

Officers from Swadlincote Police safer neighbourhood team had been on the look-out for the Vauxhall Astra after it had escaped from them in Church Gresley on Friday. However, several days later, on Tuesday, February 9, officers on duty in Swadlincote Road, Woodville, spotted the vehicle drive past. They watch it drive onto a driveway and followed the motorist.

After a “few heated words”, the car was subsequently seized and the driver reported for driving otherwise in accordance with a licence and no insurance.

A spokesman for the team said: “This vehicle previously made off from officers on Friday in Church Gresley. Since then we have been on the lookout for it. “[Officers were] on duty this evening driving along Swadlincote Road when said vehicle drives past.

“Officers momentarily lose sight of the vehicle and then watch it drive on to a driveway directly behind it.

“On approaching the vehicle apparently it hadn’t been driven and they were just retrieving a charger from the vehicle.

“A few heated words and the vehicle is now on the back of a recovery truck and the driver reported for driving otherwise in accordance with a licence and no insurance.”
