A weapon is alleged to have been discharged following a “verbal altercation” between four men near Walkergate Metro Station. No one was injured during the incident. Police were called to the scene at around 8am on Sunday after a report that two men had been threatened and a firearm discharged near to the victims.
An investigation was launched and a 48-year-old man was arrested in connection. He remains in police custody. A cordon remains in place at the scene between Benfield Road and Shields Road on Tuesday morning while investigations continue.
A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: “Shortly after 8am on Sunday (February 28) we received a report that two men had been threatened near Walkergate Metro Station. “It was reported that the victims were approached by two men who got out of a vehicle, one of whom was known to them.
“They then had a verbal altercation before one of the men in the vehicle removed a reported firearm and discharged it near to the victims.
“Nobody was injured and the two men then got back into the vehicle and fled the scene. “Officers remain at the scene carrying out a range of enquiries and a cordon has been in place to assist the investigation. There is no wider threat to the public.
“A 48-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm with the intent to endanger life.
“He remains in police custody at this time.”
