Jackknifed lorry dangling off M25 bridge

A jackknifed lorry is hanging off a motorway bridge causing miles of tailbacks. The main carriageway is expected to be closed in both directions at junction 2 for the Darenth Interchange for several hours to allow for a “complex” recovery.

It is due to the HGV perched precariously above the A2, which is also shut in both directions. Part of the lorry’s trailer is breaching a safety barrier and has caused significant damage.

Traffic officers are currently at the scene and police were called at 1.20pm. No serious injuries have been reported.

There are at least six miles of tailbacks approaching the Dartford Crossing going back past junction 3 for the Swanley Interchange. All traffic is being diverted via the Darenth Interchange roundabout.

Highways England tweeted: “As can be seen from images of the scene of the incident on the #M25 clockwise within J2 above the #A2 at #Darenth – a complex recovery and repair operation is required. Road will remain closed for some time. Please allow extra time for your journey and consider alternate routes.”

Emergency services remain in attendance as of 4.30pm this evening.

Kent Police spokesman James Walker, said: “Road closures are in place following a collision between a lorry and a roadside barrier on the A282.

“The incident was reported to Kent Police at 1.20pm and resulted in part of the lorry’s trailer breaching a safety barrier. “No serious injuries have been reported, however the A2 is closed in both directions, at the junction for the Darenth Interchange, to ensure public safety. The anticlockwise M25 is also closed at junction 2.

“Motorists are advised to expect delays and, where possible, consider using an alternative route.” Due to the nature of the recovery and repair operation the road is expected to remain closed for some time. There are delays of up to 90 minutes reported in the area and on the approach to the incident on both directions of the M25 and A2, with additional delays on the diversion routes.

Highways England has advised drivers to allow extra time if travelling in the area or to consider alternative routes.
