LIVE: M6 closed after huge crash between lorry and horse box

The M6 has been reopened after a horse was rescued from the scene of a crash. Emergency services were called to the scene of the collision, which happened on the southbound carriageway between junction 18 for Holmes Chapel and junction 19 for Knutsford at about 10.20am on Sunday. The motorway was closed in both directions, causing delays of more than half an hour as well as traffic queues for about six miles at one point.

The crash was between a lorry and a horse box, with a horse trapped inside the latter. Firefighters had to cut through the side of the horse box and the animal had to be sedated by a vet before it was rescued. It was then taken to an equine hospital but only for precautionary checks.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Constabulary confirmed that nobody suffered any injuries as a result of the collision. Highways England ordered people several times to return to their vehicle with reports that emergency services were being held up because of abandoned vehicles. The northbound carriageway reopened at just after 3pm, as did the southbound carriageway but two lanes remained closed on the latter.
