Lorry overturns 'after hitting railway bridge' with road shut off

A lorry has overturned in Salford this morning. It has happened in the Harrop Fold area of Walkden shortly before 9am. Eyewitnesses at the scene said the lorry had struck a railway bridge on Hilton Lane.

Pictures from the scene showed the HGV having flipped onto its side. The National Rail team based at Manchester Piccadilly tweeted saying that “luckily the driver was safe.”

“After it was struck this morning, we’ve been working with emergency services to ensure trains can run safely over this bridge in Walkden,” they said. “Recovery of the vehicle is underway to clear the road.”

They added: “Please know the height of your vehicle.” Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have been contacted for comment. Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) said the road remains closed and urged people to avoid the area if possible.

It is thought it could remain closed for several hours whilst it is recovered.
