Silver Jubilee Bridge lane ‘shut for a week’ as driver taken to hospital after HGV crash fuel spill

A casualty was given oxygen and taken to hospital following a collision near the Silver Jubilee Bridge in Widnes. Firefighters were called to a bridge slip road near Desoto Road at 12.57pm yesterday to reports of a collision involving a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) and a Toyota Yaris. Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said a “large amount” of fuel had leaked from the HGV onto the road, prompting crews to use a specialist dam to contain the leak.

Emergency services shut a section of Desoto Road while they dealt with the scene. No-one was trapped in either vehicle but a man who had been in the Yaris was given oxygen before being passed into the care of paramedics and taken to hospital. The northbound carriageway across the bridge remained shut last night.

Widnes police tweeted that they expected it to remain shut for a week and for traffic to be diverted across the Mersey Gateway. The closure was in place at the junction with the Station Quarter roundabout. A Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “The police attended to manage traffic.

“Road closures were set up around the Desoto Road area and diversions were put in place. “Firefighters used a specialist mobile dam to contain the leak. “They also made the car involved in the incident safe.

“The incident was handed over to Highways England and the police.

“The HGV and the car involved in the collision were both recovered.

“Firefighters were in attendance for more than three hours.”
