Cyclist suffers ‘severe injuries’ after being hit by lorry in Crewe

A cyclist has suffered “severe injuries” after he was hit by a lorry in Crewe town centre. Emergency services were called to the collision which happened on the crossroads by the Duke of Bridgewater pub on Wistaston Street at about 1.30pm on Wednesday (June 9). The crossroads were cordoned off by police at the scene and an air ambulance was called to the area.

It was confirmed that the cyclist, a man in his 40s, was taken to the Royal Stoke Hospital by road with what are believed to be serious injuries. A spokesperson for Cheshire Constabulary said: “At 1.34pm today (Wednesday June 9) police were called to a collision on Wistaston Road, Crewe involving a cyclist and a lorry. “The male cyclist is believed to have suffered serious injuries and has been taken to Royal Stoke Hospital.

“Officers remain at the scene to establish the circumstances of the collision and the road remains cordoned off.”

A spokesperson for North West Ambulance Service said they received the 999 call at 1.33pm. They said: “An ambulance and air ambulance went to the scene and the cyclist, a man in his 40s, was taken to hospital by road with severe injuries.” The lorry was parked up inside the cordon right outside the Duke of Bridgewater pub with the crossroads closed from all four directions.

Traffic initially built up along Wistaston Road coming over the railway bridge, with cars diverted by officers down Dunwoody Way.

A member of the public who was helping with efforts to divert traffic on Edleston Road said the air ambulance had landed on the car park off nearby Mill Street. One member of the public at the scene said: “I didn’t see the accident but I saw the truck parked on the road. It’s awful, I hope everyone is ok.”

The closure of the crossroads was reportedly still in place as of 7pm on Wednesday (June 9) while police carried out investigation work. Anyone with information can contact Cheshire Police on 101 or via the website quoting IML 1008722.
