Humpback whale hit our fishing boat like a truck, says captain

The skipper of a fishing boat has described the moment a humpback whale breached and landed on his small vessel, “headbutting” his stepson.

Matthew Price said the nine-metre (30ft) whale rose out of the water and landed on the boat like “a giant truck that hit us”. He added: “It happened so fast. There was this huge black shadow that flew out of the water from what felt like nowhere.”

Nick Myhill, 18, suffered a fractured spine and severe head injuries. “It headbutted Nick front on, smashing him hard and sending him flying.

He landed with great force on the back of his head,” Price said.

Matthew Price was not seriously hurt

The incident happened off a surf beach at North Narooma on the far south coast of New South Wales.
