Pub ‘evacuated’ after ‘big bangs’ heard in ice cream van fire

A Surrey pub evacuated guests from its beer garden and indoor premises due to fears an ice cream van on fire nearby might explode. The blaze broke out at around 2pm on Wednesday (June 16) at a van parked close to The Anchor pub in Wisley, which sits on the banks of the River Wey. According to Holly Kelly, who works front of house at the pub, there were several “big bangs” and the flames looked close to reaching trees.

: Cruel Surrey thief stole widow’s caravan home and left her homeless Holly, 39 and from Byfleet, said: “We were a full pub on a sunny lunchtime and suddenly realised there was a lot of smoke outside. “We wondered where it was coming from.

There is normally an ice cream van parked the other side of the canal and it was on fire, just under the bonnet to start with, but it took quite quickly.

We then decided to completely evacuate the pub because it has quite large glass windows and the whole thing [the ice cream van] was completely ablaze.” Holly reported that firemen arrived at the scene not long after. The ice cream van was parked on the other side of the waterway in a layby in Wisley Lane.

There was an alarm sounding in a vehicle parked next to it, according to Holly. She added: “There were quite a few big bangs but none that broke any windows [of the pub]. It [the van] is going to be a gutted wreckage by the time they’re done.

“The flames were so high we were worrying about the trees and whether they were going to catch fire too.” Leaving the pub at around 2.45pm, Holly reported the fire crew had the blaze under control and the pub was beginning to welcome customers back inside. A Surrey Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) spokesperson said: “We were called today around 2pm to a vehicle fire on Wisley Lane in Woking.

One fire engine attended and the crew left the scene at 4.01pm.”
