Woman dies and a second is fighting for life after a serious truck crash at Melbourne airport

A woman has died and another is in critical condition after a horror truck crash at Melbourne Airport.

Emergency crews rushed to the intersection of Terminal Drive and Centre Road where a car and a truck had collided at about 2.40pm on Wednesday afternoon.

Confronting aerial images from the scene shows a crumpled car partially stuck underneath the heavy vehicle, with emergency workers trying desperately to retrieve those trapped inside.

The driver of the car, who was pronounced dead at the scene, is yet to be formally identified. 

A woman who was the passenger is now fighting for life after suffering ‘life-threatening’ injuries in the terrifying smash.

She was taken to hospital after being freed from the wreckage by emergency services. 

The truck driver was not injured in the collision and is now being questioned by police about what caused the accident.  

‘The exact circumstances surrounding the collision are yet to be determined and investigations are ongoing,’ Victoria Police said.

The truck driver will also undergo mandatory drug and alcohol testing.

With crash investigators now on scene, authorities are warning of significant traffic delays.

A large number of emergency service vehicles can be seen arriving at the shocking scene.

With crash investigators now on scene, authorities are warning of significant traffic delays. 

‘Anyone dropping off or picking up loved ones from the airport must use the 10 Minute Wait Zone off Mercer Drive,’ Melbourne Airport Tweeted following the crash.

‘The diversion is due to a collision and we appreciate your understanding.’  

Centre Road is still closed in both directions, with only one lane leading to the Tullamarine Freeway and the airport. 

Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash to immediately contact Victoria police.
